I am thinking of fitting a oil cooler to my V70 96 model estate for the auto box and thought what you guys thought of the idea, as i am planing to fit one for the engine oil also as i have a turbo and thought it would be benificial.
Your car is already fitted with oil coolers for the engine and gearbox. Don't forgert that one function of the 'cooler' is to heat up the oil for the gearbox faster in cold weather. You may have noticed that the gearbox does not operate the lock up function until it gets to temperature. Fitting additional cooling may increase gearbox wear in cool conditions.
i was under the impression that oil coolers on short journeys actually caused a build up of white sludge over time as the oil never gets to warm up enough to get rid of condensation,i'me most probarbly wrong but sure i heard it somewhere.
I suppose short journeys in cold weather with an oil cooler might not be a good idea but if you are planning on towing a 'van or trekking up and down motorways it should help to have a cooler. I wonder if there are any thermostatically controlled coolers? Matt
